Orbital Habitats: The Pros and Cons
Orbital habitats are rotating stations that use spin to create gravity. Most are in low Earth orbit, at geostationary altitude or at the L5 Lagrange point.
- Gravity: full Earth-normal gravity on the outer ring. No adjustment period, and better for long-term bone and muscle health.
- Commute: as little as 20 minutes by shuttle to an Earth spaceport. No transfer windows.
- Views: the whole planet, and a sunrise every 90 minutes in low orbit.
- Trade-offs: the highest price per square meter in space real estate, smaller floor plans and homeowner association rules that cover everything from spin rate to window tinting.

Surface Homes: The Pros and Cons
Surface homes are pressurized domes and sub-surface habitats on Mars, Luna and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.
- Space: far more room for the money. Yards, greenhouses and garages are normal on Mars.
- Community: real towns with schools, parks and neighbors, especially in Jezero Crater and Ganymede's Galileo Regio.
- Growth: surface markets, Mars above all, have seen the strongest long-term appreciation.
- Trade-offs: reduced gravity (38 percent on Mars, 16 percent on Luna), dust or radiation exposure to plan around and, beyond the Moon, travel dictated by transfer windows.
